Ernest J. Bellocq (1873- 1949)

Mr. Bellocq was born in the French Quarters in New Orleans. He earned his living as a commercial photographer working for shipping companies while at the same time taking photographs of working women in the red-light district of Storyville. This district got its name from a Mr. Story who in 1898 decreed that prostitution should be legalized in this area....to sort of try to control and confine this profession and its associations like gambling, drinking and crime etc Jazz music was born at this time in the area, it was very exciting/ interesting times. Storyville is because of Mr. Bellocq a chapter ingrained now forever by his amazingly beautiful portraits of its prostitutes.
