A Little Conversation with Megan Cedro

Me and Megan are Facebook friends! I fell in love with her work or she fell in love with Alice in Wonderland....not sure who discovered whom first....it doesn't matter, we are now facebook friends.

Her story is wonderful, hope you will enjoy reading this as much as I have.

Name: Megan Cedro

Occupation: Artist

Current Location: Brooklyn, NY

Tell me a little about yourself growing up?

I was very independent. I wanted to be a dog, I always ran around on my hands and knees. I remember being dirty but wearing dresses. I was weird with a vivid imagination. I was called rat girl for a period of time in middle school by the boys, then in high school I cared too much, and in college thought I was the coolest in the worst way. I wore way too much eyeliner and curtains as skirts.

When you were little, what did you spend most of your time doing?

Playing with animals, we lived in Florida where we had endless lizards, snakes and frogs to catch! I once carried a rooster home from the bus stop, with spurs and all and we kept him as a pet. I was outside all the time, building forts and collecting sticks.

Where and what made you become an artist? What influences did you have?

As soon as school began, that's when art began. I was not the best of students, I would doodle all over my paper while my mind wondered. I remember sending my drawings to magazines and knowing that art was what I was going to do no matter what.

What have you studied so far? and where?

I studied fashion design at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. During college, I worked as a costume stylist and wanted to move to new york to do window displays or be a fashion illustrator.

Other than being an illustrator/ painter artist, do you explore any other areas in the arts? I'm a freelance MAC makeup artist from time to time, I've done New York fashion week, body painting, but my favorite is helping women who come out of chemotherapy and making them feel confident and beautiful. I've recently gotten into sculpture, I've been working with paper mache which I absolutely adore. I'd like to make music videos like Spike Jonez or make a animated short film like the Triplets of Belville.

Any influences that inspires your work today?

Everything...from fashion to science. As far as other artists...The street artist BLU, I can just see how he finds his characters on buildings and love how he has this natural urge and can't stop creating. I really love an artist named Rikka Sormunen, I just found her the other day. I'll always love Picasso and Egon Schielle.

A typical day for you, how does it look like?

I'm a morning person. I wake up happy, drink my coffee and head to my studio where I listen to NPR and paint away. Then I ride my bike from house to house and walk pitbulls, poodles, boxers, french bulldogs, scotties and more around Williamsburg from 12-3. After that I either go back to my studio or to my boyfriends chocolate factory right in the neighborhood and wrap chocolate bars while hanging out. I like to clean my house, decorate and take care of my plants.

I'm a morning person too...love your routine!

Some random questions now...:)

What is your life mantra?

"If you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything." That one always creeps up on me, I'm pretty easy going, sometimes too easy going and need to hold my ground.

How would your perfect day be like?

I'd wake up really early with the sunrise and tend my mini dream farm. I'd feed my 2 goats, chickens, let the dog out..check the garden, pick fresh produce. Then I'd work in my garage-like studio, doors open, perfect weather, great music. That night we'd go to a costume party and drink wine and play games with all of my best friends.

Secret Talents?

Writing really good songs in my head.

If you could make one wish, what would it be?

I wish I could preserve a huge chunk of the rainforest and build a tree house on the canopy level.

Which movie did you see? what did you think?

I watched Motorcycle Diaries again, made me think of being kind and helping others.

What book did you last read? what did you think about it?

I read Cat Powers biography and fell in love with her all over again.

Favorite song at the moment?

Worried Shoes by Karen O. on "Where the Wild Things Are" soundtrack

Favorite location in this world? why?

Swamplands...they are gorgeous, creepy and filled with life.

What makes you laugh?

People who make fun of themselves! Danny McBride.

What makes you angry?

Bad moods and money.
